What is this Calculator?

An Education Loan Calculator helps students and parents in India estimate the monthly EMI required to repay a loan taken for higher education — whether for a domestic college or studying abroad.

Education loans work differently from most other loans because of the moratorium period: a grace period covering your course duration plus typically 6-12 months, during which you aren't required to make EMI payments while you study.

How it Works

This calculator computes the standard amortizing EMI for the repayment phase, once your moratorium period ends:

E = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1)

Important: most Indian lenders continue to accrue (simple) interest during your moratorium period. Unless you choose to pay this interest as it accrues, it is typically added to your principal at the end of the moratorium — meaning your actual EMI, once repayment starts, is calculated on a higher principal than what you originally borrowed.

Example Calculation

Suppose you take an education loan of ₹8,00,000 at 9% interest, to be repaid over 10 years once your moratorium period ends.

  • Your monthly EMI will be approximately ₹10,134.
  • Over 10 years, you will pay approximately ₹4,16,087 in total interest.

If you also had a 2-year course plus a 1-year moratorium and did not pay any interest during that period, the accrued interest would be added to your ₹8,00,000 principal before this EMI calculation even begins — so run the numbers with your likely higher post-moratorium principal for a more realistic estimate.

Benefits of Using This Tool

  • Career Planning: Knowing your post-graduation EMI helps you set a realistic minimum salary target when evaluating job offers.
  • Moratorium Strategy: See how paying even just the interest during your study period (simple interest servicing) can meaningfully lower your eventual EMI compared to letting it capitalize.
  • Tax Benefit Awareness: Combine this with tax planning — the entire interest paid on an education loan is deductible under Section 80E, with no upper limit, for up to 8 years.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does interest accrue during the moratorium period?

Yes, in most cases. Even though you aren't required to make EMI payments while studying, simple interest typically continues to accrue on the disbursed amount. Unless you service (pay) this interest as it accrues, it is usually capitalized — added to your principal — once repayment begins.

Should I pay interest during my moratorium period if I can afford to?

Yes, if possible. Paying just the interest portion while studying prevents it from capitalizing into your principal, which meaningfully reduces your total EMI burden and overall interest cost once full repayment starts.

What tax benefits apply to education loans in India?

Under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act, the entire interest paid on an education loan (for yourself, spouse, children, or a student for whom you are the legal guardian) is deductible from taxable income, with no upper cap, for up to 8 consecutive years starting from when repayment begins.

Can I prepay my education loan once I start earning?

Yes, and it's usually a smart move. Most Indian lenders do not charge a prepayment penalty on education loans (especially those with a floating interest rate), so making extra payments once you have income can significantly reduce your total interest paid.
