What is this Calculator?

A GST (Goods and Services Tax) Calculator is an essential utility for business owners, freelancers, and consumers in India. It quickly calculates the tax amount added to or included in a price based on the standard Indian GST slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%).

How it Works

The calculator works in two modes:

  • Add GST (Exclusive): Calculates tax on the base price. GST = (Base Amount × Rate) / 100.
  • Remove GST (Inclusive): Extracts the base price from a total bill. GST = Total Amount - [Total Amount × (100 / (100 + Rate))].

It also automatically splits the total GST evenly into CGST (Central) and SGST (State) for intra-state billing.

Example Calculation

If you bill a client for ₹10,000 for a service (18% slab), adding GST gives a total of ₹11,800.

If you buy a laptop for exactly ₹50,000 inclusive of 18% GST, removing the GST shows the base price was roughly ₹42,372.88 and the tax paid was ₹7,627.12.

Benefits of Using This Tool

  • Invoicing Made Easy: Instantly generate the exact CGST and SGST numbers needed for professional invoices.
  • Reverse Calculation: Extremely useful when retailers give you a "final price" and you need to figure out how much tax you actually paid.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST and SGST apply to transactions within the same state (intra-state), splitting the tax 50/50 between the Central and State governments. IGST applies to transactions between two different states (inter-state) and goes entirely to the Central government, which then settles the state's share separately.

How do I know which GST slab applies to my product or service?

GST rates in India are categorized into slabs (0%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%) based on the specific HSN (goods) or SAC (services) code assigned to your item. Check the official GST rate finder on the GST portal or consult your CA for the exact applicable rate for your specific product or service.

Can I claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on GST paid?

If you're a GST-registered business, you can generally claim ITC on GST paid for business purchases, offsetting it against the GST you collect on sales. This effectively means GST is only paid on the value added at each stage, not the full price at every step of the supply chain.

Is GST calculated on the discounted price or the original price?

GST is calculated on the final transaction value after any trade discount is applied (as shown on the invoice), not the original MRP or list price. Cash discounts or incentives given after the sale, however, are typically not deducted before calculating GST.
